Messing up can bring shame or fear. Sometimes we think that when we fail, we disappoint people so badly that the love changes. But God does not move away from us when we get things wrong. He comes closer, to teach us, to help us grow, and to remind us that we are still loved while we are learning. Mateus broke something at home. He did not mean to, but the moment he heard the crash he knew something had happened that should not have.

He stood still for a moment, thinking about what to do. His mind started racing: “What if I hide this? What if I do not say anything?” Even so, something inside him said it was better to tell the truth. He walked slowly over to his mom, his heart pounding. He was expecting a hard reaction, an immediate telling-off.

When she saw him, she did something Mateus was not expecting: she hugged him first.

She did not ignore what had happened. Afterwards they talked, they fixed what could be fixed, and they learned together. But before any of that, his mom reminded him of the most important thing: she loved him. That hug did not erase the mistake, but it changed the way Mateus handled it.

Sometimes we think that when we get things wrong, the love changes. That we have let people down so badly we are not seen the same way anymore. But God does not move away when you fail. He comes closer, not to pretend nothing happened, but to walk with you while you learn.
