Five short prayers for a discouraged morning

These are written to be said out loud, not read about. They are short on purpose: a discouraged morning is not the morning for a long prayer, and God has never needed volume. Say the one that fits. Change any word that is not true for you — a borrowed prayer only helps if you mean it.

When you do not want to get up

Start here, before coffee, before the phone. This is the prayer for the moment your feet are still under the blanket and the day already feels like too much.

God, I am awake and I do not want to be. My soul is heavy and I am not going to pretend otherwise in front of you. I am not asking you to make me feel excited about today. I am asking you to get me to the end of it. Be my hope while I do not have any of my own. Amen.

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.

Salmo 42:5, BSB

When your strength is gone

The psalmist says his body and his heart fail — and then, in the same breath, that God is the strength of his heart. He does not deny the failing. He puts something underneath it.

Father, I am running on empty. I have nothing clever to bring you and nothing left to push through with. My body is tired and my heart is tired. Be the strength underneath mine today, because mine has run out. Hold me up in the hours I cannot hold myself. Amen.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Salmo 73:26, BSB

When you cannot pray well

One psalm begins with a man calling out from the ends of the earth, with his heart overwhelmed, asking to be led to a rock higher than himself. That is permission to pray badly. You do not have to arrive composed.

Lord, I am calling from a long way off and I do not have good words. My heart is overwhelmed and my prayers are coming out in pieces. Take the pieces. Lead me to ground higher than the place I am standing, because I cannot climb there myself. Amen.

From the ends of the earth I call out to You whenever my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Salmo 61:2, BSB

When you are wearing out on the inside

Paul writes that even while the outer person wastes away, the inner one is being renewed day by day. Not once, and not permanently — day by day, which is exactly the size of the renewal you need this morning.

God, I feel like I am wearing thin. Something in me is being used up faster than it is being filled. Renew me today — not for the year, not for the whole road, just for today. Do the quiet repair I cannot see happening. Amen.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16, BSB

When you cannot lift your head

David, running from his own son, calls God the one who lifts his head. It is a physical image, and discouragement is a physical thing — it shows up in the shoulders and the neck long before it shows up in your theology.

Lord, my head is down and I cannot lift it on my own. Be my shield today when I have no defence left in me. Lift my face enough to see the next hour. I am not asking for the whole road, only for the next step of it. Amen.

But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head.

Salmo 3:3, BSB

A prayer for the day you ask for help

One more, and it matters. This page is a devotional, not medical or psychological advice, and it does not replace professional help. If the heaviness has lasted weeks, if nothing gives you pleasure any more, if you are barely sleeping or barely getting out of bed, or if you have had thoughts of harming yourself, please talk to a doctor or a mental health professional — and if you are in danger right now, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line. Depression is not a shortage of faith, and no amount of praying harder is the treatment for it. Proverbs says there is safety in many counsellors; a professional is one of them, and so is the friend you have not told yet.

God, I need more help than a quiet morning can give me. Give me the courage to say it out loud to a real person today, and take the shame off me while I do. Thank you that asking for help is not a failure of faith. Go with me into that conversation. Amen.

For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but with many counselors comes deliverance.

Proverbs 11:14, BSB

If all you did this morning was say one of these out loud, that was a prayer, and it was heard.
