Morning prayers to say out loud

These are prayers, not an article about prayer. Six of them, short enough to say before you get out of bed and plain enough to mean. Pick the one that matches the morning you actually woke up into, say it out loud if you can, and change any line that is not true for you — a prayer you have edited is still a prayer.

How to use these

Say them out loud, even under your breath. Something shifts when a prayer stops being a thought and becomes a sound in the room. You hear yourself mean it, or you hear yourself not meaning it, and both of those are worth knowing before eight in the morning.

Do not save them for a quiet moment that may never arrive. They were written for a kitchen with the kettle on, a bus, a bathroom with the door shut, a parked car outside a building you do not want to walk into. None of them need a Bible in your hands, a room to yourself, or ten free minutes.

And say them more slowly than feels natural. Read straight through, the longest of these takes about forty seconds. Slowing down is the only discipline any of them ask of you.

  • Out loud, or almost — a whisper counts.
  • Wherever you are, however you are dressed.
  • Slower than feels natural.
  • Change any words that are not yours, and stop when you have said enough.

In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at daybreak I lay my plea before You and wait in expectation.

Salmo 5:3, BSB

When I woke up already tired

For the morning when the alarm sounded like an accusation and the day is already ahead of you.

God, I am awake and I am already tired. I have not started today and I am somehow behind it.

I am not asking to feel strong. I am asking for enough. Enough patience for the first hour. Enough kindness for the first person who needs something from me. Enough steadiness to do the one thing in front of me and then the next one.

Your mercy is new this morning even though I am not. Let me live off that today instead of off whatever I have left.

Amen.

Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

Lamentations 3:22-23, BSB

Before a hard day

For the morning of the conversation, the appointment, the result, the room you are dreading.

God, I know what is coming today and I do not want to walk into it. Go in ahead of me.

When my voice shakes, hold it steady. When I want to say the cutting thing, close my mouth. When I am afraid, remind me that you have not gone anywhere.

I am not asking for an easy day. I am asking not to face this one on my own. Show me the next step and I will take it.

Amen.

Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Teach me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul.

Salmo 143:8, BSB

A prayer for an ordinary morning

For the days when nothing is wrong, which are most of them, and which are easy to spend without noticing.

God, thank you for this morning. Nothing dramatic has happened and I am grateful for that.

Give me today what I need for today. Food, work, a clear head, the people I love. Not the whole year, not the whole plan. Today.

Let me notice one good thing before noon and say thank you for it out loud.

Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Matthew 6:11, BSB

When I only have thirty seconds

Some mornings you are late, the children are shouting, and the honest amount of time you have is the length of one sentence. One sentence is a real prayer. Say one of these on the stairs and let that be the whole of it.

There is no prize for length here. A short prayer said today beats a long one you keep postponing until a calmer week that never comes.

  • God, be with me today.
  • God, I am yours. Help me.
  • Thank you for waking me. Go with me.
  • God, just the first hour. Help me through the first hour.
  • Lord, have mercy on me today.

Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Salmo 90:14, BSB

For the people I will see today

A prayer that turns outward, which is often the fastest way out of your own head.

God, today I will be around people who have no idea what kind of morning I have had — and I have no idea what kind they have had.

Make me slower to be annoyed than I was yesterday. Keep my words small and kind. If someone needs something from me that I did not plan to give, let me give it anyway.

Bless the ones I love. Bless the one I am struggling with, and change me before you change them.

Amen.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Salmo 19:14, BSB

If you say only one of these and then get on with your morning, that is enough. You have not done a small version of something bigger. You have prayed. Tomorrow you can say it again.
